The 4TB mark is now officially available in the Western Digital’s catalog. The manufacturer has two new drives architected around five trays of 800 GB. The first, named RE WD4000FYYZ, operates a SATA 6 Gb/s against the 6 Gb/s SAS for the second (WD4001FYYG.).
These two new 3.5-inch units appear quite similar regarding technical characteristics with an identical number of plates and speed (7200 rpm).
Face to face, what stands up, is the connector where one is a SATA 6 Gb/s supporting a 64MB cache and the other SAS with 32MB of cache. In terms of transfer rate, WD announces 171 MB/s for SAS version (WD4001FYYG) and 182 MB/s for the SATA (WD4000FYYZ).
Both units started to hit the market. The target prices are $479 for RE 4TB SAS and $459 for the RE 4TB SATA. Western Digital has confidence in their mechanics since a five-year warranty joins them.
