Toshiba ZL2 55″ Glasses-Free 3D HDTV

Toshiba has shown off a new glasses free 55 inch 3D HTDV at this years IFA in Berlin, The Toshiba ZL2 — and according to Toshiba this is the world’s first large screen glasses free 3D TV.

What makes the ZL2 special is that unlike most glasses-free 3D displays – it will support multiple viewers at once. Toshiba claims that there are up to nine different viewing positions which viewers can use to experience the 3D effect.

The TV uses a parallax barrier that makes it possible to send out two images from the screen with one being directed at the left eye and the other at the right eye. What makes this TV even more impressive is that rather than having users sit in particular locations around the room, the TV uses a camera to track the location of each user in the room.

It can then adjust the screen to send images correctly to each viewer by using the lenslets.

No technical specs stating how and why it will support 9 viewers have been released, but all will probably be revealed in due time. The ZL2 will have a 55” screen with a quadHD resolution of 3840 x 2160. Besides upscaling from 2D to 3D, you can also upscale resolution to the ZL2′s Quad Full HD display with Toshiba’s Resolution+ image enhancement technology. Again, content that can be upscaled include DVD, Blu-ray, and even your regular TV programs that are in SD or HD resolution.

Wi-Fi and a free remote control app for iOS devices let users control the TV from their smartphone as well. A USB recording feature lets users record programming to a connected hard drive USB.
