The future of MediaCenter in Windows 8 clarified

Gradually, the worst fears are confirmed for MediaCenter. From the Microsoft blog comes the confirmation that you will have to purchase a pack to have the Windows Media Center. There will be two versions of Windows: Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro. Windows 8 Pro users will need to purchase Windows 8 Media Center Pack, while Windows 8 users will have to get the Windows 8 Pro Pack.

The latter package also incorporate Media Center turns your Windows 8 into the Pro version, so it will be quite more expensive than Windows Media Center Pack 8. In short if you buy Windows 8 you will forced to go to the Pro version to get Windows Media Center.

So in any case you must pay to have Windows Media Center. More, Windows 8 will not incorporate DVD playback unless we have purchased Windows Media Center.
