Seagate FreeAgent Theater+1080P HD Media Player STCEA201-RK Review

The Seagate FreeAgent Theater+1080P HD Media Player STCEA201-RK is the media player only version of the device and the only difference between it and the other one is that the other one comes with a 500GB FreeAgent Go USB storage. Since most of us tend to have some kind of external storage these days anyway, just having the media player makes more sense. Seagate includes its own proprietary docking system for its FreeAgent Go line of USB storage devices, which is good news for those of us who already own one (including me).

The FreeAgent Theater device plays almost all the common audio and video formats, including ones that are not very common on other devices like the MKV format. Since it can access your wireless network, any network attached storage you have will be accessible through the device. This means you can constantly upgrade the size of your collection without fear of running out of space. As for plugging your computer in, it does not do that directly. Instead it relies on the FreeAgent Go drive to use the provided software to automatically sync all your media content, including video, music and images.

Connectivity-wise it covers all bases — it comes with HDMI (1.3), Component and Composite for video and stereo, optical S/PDIF and HDMI (1.3) for digital audio. It has 1 USB 2.0 port in front and 1 at the back  along with an Ethernet port (10/100). You will want to get the optional wireless adapter to make it a wireless solution, else it will be stuck to being wired to the router. Do update to the latest firmware once the device in online (it will perform the update on its own, thankfully).

Comparatively speaking, the Seagate FreeAgent Theater+1080P HD Media Player STCEA201-RK is an elegant solution than most but could do with a bit more work. However, for simple digital media set ups at home, it is a really great solution. Having all 3 types of video and audio outs is really helpful as well and might tip the balance for a lot of users, especially with the affordable price tag of $61.50.
