Onkyo TX-NR616: 7.2 THX A/V Amplifier

It was only a matter of days, Onkyo finally lifts the curtain on the first part of its new range of Home Cinema amplifiers, and naturally we begin the presentations by some of the most anticipated of the year, the TX-NR609 successor, here is the amplifier Onkyo TX-NR616 7.2. If the Onkyo TX-NR609 was already a very complete amplifier, the TX-NR616 reised the bar a notch with the new features we told you about in December: MHL and InstaPrevue. But a few more additions are also emerging.

Equipped with the Wide Range Amplifier WRAT, and an amplifier section capable of developing a power of 7 x 165 W (6 ohms), the Onkyo TX-NR616 includes TI Burr-Brown 192 kHz/24-Bit DACs, accompanied by a 32-bit DSP and the usual three-stage inverted Darlington circuitry. Everything is powered by an H.C.P.S. massive high power transformer.

Like its predecessor, the Onkyo TX-NR616 has the THX Select2 Plus certification, the presence of the usual HD audio codecs, which must be added the presence of Prologic IIz and Audyssey DSX for adding speakers height/width. Audyssey 2EQ calibration, and EQ Dynamic and Volume EQ corrections are also present. For the video part, Onkyo TX-NR616 Upscales to 4K with Qdeo Technology by Marvell like the 609 also, allowing upscaling of its sources to resolution of 4096 x 2160 pixels on a 4K-compatible TV.

iPhone/iPod, Windows 7 and DLNA certified, it provides support for MP3, WMA, WMA Lossless, Ogg Vorbis, AAC, FLAC, WAV and LPCM. Access to web radios (vTuner, Last.fm) is also possible, as are the audio streaming services, on which we go back a little bit lower.

What’s New

In terms of innovations, the TX -NR616 integrates the  MHL (Mobile High Definition Link) function, for connecting a compatible smartphone or touch pad, with support for 1080p video and multichannel 7.1. It is also possible to control the playback of the playlist of a MHL smartphone from the remote of the amp. Another addition, with the InstaPrevue, which displays a thumbnail preview even before you switch on the source. A PiP should be more practical than the usual methods of selection of sources, which we are accustomed to. Note also the addition of the Hybrid Standby mode is very useful as it allows the passage of the HDMI signal to the TV, while the amp is in standby mode, while retaining the sound of the TV.

Regarding audio streaming services, the Onkyo TX-NR616 has the  MP3Tunes service, which offers a music store in the cloud, 2 GB is available at registration. AUPEO!, Spotify and Simfy are also accessible from the amp.

Price and release date yet undisclosed.
