Onko announces DP312 Smart Top nettop

Onkyo is continuing its diversification away from audiovisual equipment and into computing while staying in the living room with the launch of the DP312 Smart Top nettop.

Designed to be connected to a HDTV, the DP312 is an ultra-slim small form factor PC built around the same hardware used in many netbooks – including an Intel Atom N270 processor, backed up with up to 4GB of RAM and a 500GB hard disk, along with a slot-loading optical drive. The top-end model even features an integrated FM/AM radio tuner.

While the processor is a little weedy by modern standards, the inclusion of an Nvidia ION graphics chip promises to keep video playback running smoothly – and with hardware acceleration included, full HD 1080p video shouldn’t be a problem.

Running Windows 7 Home Premium and including a wireless keyboard and mouse along with a bundled remote control for use during media playback, it’s a neat little unit.

The base model – with 320GB hard drive – is expected to retail for ¥64,800 (around £450), while the higher end model – with 500GB drive and radio tuner – will set you back ¥84,800 (around £590).

Unfortunately, while Onkyo has confirmed that the DP312 Smart Top will launch in its native Japan, there’s no mention yet of when – or even if – this particular nettop will hit UK shores.
