Hitachi speeds the 4TB Hard Drive to 7200rpm

Update: Estimated Price

Hitachi is one of the first manufacturers to have launched into the field of 4TB hard disk drives. After a 5900 rpm version, the 5K4000, here is the  7200 rpm variantion with a larger cache.

The 7K4000 is a 3.5-inch hard drive with 4 TB. This capacity is achieved with the use of five 800 GB plates. Compared to it’s 5900 rpm older brother, the rotation speed increases to 7200 rpm while the cache is doubled to 64 MB.

With this improvements we must expect a better performance, although this point remains discreet by Hitachi. We just know that the maximum throughput goes from 161 Mb/s to 204 Mb/s.

Finally, the noise increased from 25 to 29 dB while the power consumption of goes from 4.9 to 6.9 Watts.

Hitachi does not yet have a release date or price but is likely to be high with a hard drive market that is currently very tight.
